Of course, 46Gbps is the theoretical maximum in perfect lab conditions. You’re unlikely to hit anything near those speeds on your home network. Still, upgrading to Wi-Fi 7 router will help you make better use of multi-gigabit fibre, ensuring all of your wireless devices receive faster Wi-Fi speeds.
2Better Throughput
Wi-Fi 7 introduced two significant upgrades designed to improve network throughput and capacity: 320MHz Wi-Fi channels and 4K Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM).
Your Wi-Fi router sends its signal across the 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands (thoughWi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 routers also broadcast on a new 6GHz band). Within those bands are Wi-Fi channels through which your router sends data to your devices.
Think of Wi-Fi bands as freeways and Wi-Fi channels as lanes. The more people use one channel, the more likely it is to become congested. Each Wi-Fi channel has a set capacity, measured in MHz. The smaller that figure is, the more likely the channel is to suffer slow data throughput. Wider channels (more MHz) can process more data faster, meaning faster feeling internet speeds.
Quadrature Amplitude Modulation is slightly different from this but works in tandem. Modulation effectively measures how much data is sent with each signal. Upgrading Wi-F7 to 4K-QAM from Wi-Fi 6’s 1024-QAM will significantly improve network efficiency and reduce latency, especially in situations where numerous Wi-Fi devices are connected.
3Less Congestion, 6GHz Wi-Fi Support
We’ve already touched on 6GHz, which is another reason you should consider upgrading to a Wi-Fi 7 router.
Remember the freeway and channels previously discussed? The 6GHz Wi-Fi band adds another freeway to your Wi-Fi setup. Better still, as 6GHz is still very new, it remains uncongested by other devices, reducing interference, especially in congested areas with numerous overlapping networks (like an apartment building).
