Summary

Since the release of the officialStarfieldCreation Kit modding tool last month, the game’s community has been quick to add new gameplay mechanics, locations, customization options and more. While previously modders were only able to use unsupported third party tools and mods were limited to PC, the Creation Kit’s mods are supported by Bethesda and the vast majority are available for both PC and Xbox, letting all ofStarfield’s community expand upon Bethesda’s original vision should they wish.

There is also official Creation content, which includes missions such as the Trackers Alliance’s “The Vulture”, but this content has been controversial due to its price.

So far, many of these mods have seen players transformStarfield’s Settled Systems into galaxies from otherpopular sci-fi franchises such asHalo,Star Wars, and more through the inclusion of costumes, weapons and starships, but there are others that tie better into the original game, and would have been great natural additions if Bethesda had included them at launch, such as reinventing the pleasure planetNeon to better reflect its earlier concept artdesigns. With the build up to the launch ofStarfield’s first major DLC expansion,Shattered Spacethis Fall, many have been revisiting the game, and have turned to these new Creation mods to pass the time, with somenew features being added through Creations that would work extremely well with the themes of the upcoming DLC.

Starfield’s Shattered Space Expansion Will Focus On House Va’Ruun

Players Will Finally Be Able To Visit The Mysterious Va’Ruun’Kai

Shattered Spacewas announced prior toStarfield’s launch, with the expansion being used as an incentive to upgrade to the game’sPremium and Constellation editions. After plenty of speculation and a tease in a developer video, areveal trailer at Summer Game Fest 2024confirmed thatShattered Spacewould lean more heavily into some of the horror aesthetic some parts ofStarfieldhad while exploring the mysterious House Va’ruun, a highly religious group that is situated on Va’Ruun’Kai, a planet in a yet-to-be-disclosed Star system.

House Va’Ruun follows a being known as “The Great Serpent,” and although it tried to restore its reputation after its former leader tried to enact war against the rest of civilization, the house has since withdrawn itself into isolation by the timeStarfield’s events unfold in the year 2330.

Despite players not being able to visit House Va’ruun’s main base of operations inStarfield, players would run into religious zealots who had twisted the group’s teachings into something that justifies their acts of violence toward “non-believers"and there was plenty of lore surrounding the group to be discovered through various conversations and items. Players' backstories could also be linked to the group’s teachings, as the"Serpent’s Embrace” traitstates that they were raised worshiping the Great Serpent.

Much of the lore can be uncovered through conversations withromanceable companion Andreja, as she was a member of House Va’ruun before joining Constellation as an astronomer and navigator.

Two New Creations Mods Would Fit In Perfectly With Shattered Space’s Themes Of Religion

While Also Offering More Non-Lethal Solutions

Two new Creations mods by Verified modder korodic seem like they would fit in well withShattered Space’s themes of religion. The “Non-Lethal Framework” and “Useful Brigs” mods are intended to provide players with more non-lethal approaches to conflict, where they are able to apprehend their opponents and bring them aboard their ships as prisoners, assigning them to their brigs. While this is a nice option to have for those who don’t want to blast their way through every enemy in the game, it could also tie into how House Va’Ruun wanted to restore its reputation prior to becoming extremely reclusive, but the biggest surprise was when RedditorJohnharlockshared footage of one of their prisoners praying.

Religions are represented acrossStarfield, but it would be interesting ifShattered Spacecould shine more of a light on the different beliefs with its inclusion of House Va’Ruun. Alreadyhaving a prisoner praying in a time of need adds more depth to the gameand comes across as quite a human action, with many real-world inmates stating that they found religion as a way to atone for their past sins or as a way to cope with their imprisonment.

Hopefully, as Fall draws nearer, it won’t be long before Bethesda shares more details surroundingShattered Space’s story and characters, and just what players have to look forward to as they explore House Va’Ruun. Until then, details such as the ones shown in korodic’s mods are a great way to subtly add some more worldbuilding toStarfieldin the months leading up to the expansion’s launch.

Starfield

Bethesda Game Studios presents Starfield - the first original IP from the studio in twenty-five-plus years. Set in the year 2310, the United Colonies and Freestar Collective are observing a shaky truce after a war set 20 years prior. The player will customize their character as a member of a space exploration team called Constellation while navigating The Settled Systems and the conflicts between the warring factions. According to Bethesda, players can explore over 100 systems and 1000 planets to find resources and build their ships, living out their own sci-fi journeys.
