Twitter Is Finally Testing an Edit Button… but There’s a Catch
Twitter has announced that it is finally testing its most requested feature: an edit button. But there’s a catch. You won’t get access to Twitter’s Edit Tweet button unless you subscribe to Twitter Blue.
Twitter Announces an Edit Button Test for Some Users
After teasing the feature in April 2022, Twitter officially announced on September 1, 2022 that it was testing the edit feature in ablog poston the company website. But this announcement came with a few caveats.
Firstly, the test is started in a very limited capacity: starting with one country and just a small group of users. Over the next month, the test will expand to Twitter Blue subscribers, giving them early access to the feature.

Twitter explained its reasoning in the blog post, saying:
Like any new feature, we’re intentionally testing Edit Tweet with a smaller group to help us incorporate feedback while identifying and resolving potential issues. This includes how people might misuse the feature.

While the company usually tests features before rolling them out to all users—just as it did when rolling out the ability tocreate Twitter Circles—the edit test seems like it will be more controlled than previous tests.
But the early access to the Edit Tweet feature may help more users decidewhether Twitter Blue is worth the money.

How Will the Edit Tweet Feature Work on Twitter?
So after years of speculation and suggestions, how has Twitter decided to implement the feature?
The company has imposed a time limit during which the edit feature will be available after a tweet has been posted. Those who have access to the feature will be able to edit their tweet for 30 minutes after posting. Each time you edit the feature, the change is added to the tweet’s edit history. While not everyone will be able to edit their tweets, any user will be able to see that a tweet has been revised. These tweets will be marked with an icon, timestamp, and label.

If someone clicks on the label, they can view the full Edit History. This history lists all the past versions of the tweet, so that there’s a clear record of what was initially written. Twitter notes that the time limit and label are essential to implementing the feature, due to the concerns around how the feature could be used to mislead people.
For context, the time limit and version history play an important role here. They help protect the integrity of the conversation and create a publicly accessible record of what was said.

The company also plans to monitor how the feature affects engagement and how it’s used by testers.
The Twitter Edit Button Is Finally Becoming a Reality
The final implementation of the edit button on Twitter will depend on how users engage with the feature. But for the first time, the highly requested option is being given a chance.
