Warning: Contains SPOILERS for House of the Dragon season 2, episode 6, “Smallfolk.”
Summary
House of the Dragonseason 2, episode 6, “Smallfolk” raises an interesting question about Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons, just a few weeks after theGame of Thronesprequel seemingly revealed their origin.House of the Dragonshowed Daenerys' dragon eggsin season 2, episode 3, with the director confirming they were indeed the same eggs Dany received as a wedding gift from Illyrio Mopatis over a century later.
Speaking toEW, showrunner Ryan Condal later clarified that is just"one possible future,“but at the very least it means theycouldhave been Daenerys' dragon eggs. And if that’s the case, then it’s also worth thinking about where those eggs came from. Since they were seemingly a relatively fresh clutch, the obvious answer is they came from Syrax, providing a furtherconnection between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Daenerys. Syrax is known to have laid eggs regularly, but do the dragons have a father?

Seasmoke Looks A Lot Like Drogon In House Of The Dragon
Is He The Father Of Daenerys' Dragons?
Seasmoke chooses a new rider inHouse of the Dragonseason 2, episode 6, bonding with Addam of Hull. But what’s also really notable in this installment - more so than others, since we get to see multiple close-ups of him - is just how much he looks like Daenerys' dragons, in particular Drogon. The visual design of dragons inHouse of the Dragonvaries a lot, so it’s telling that they are so alike.
This may be nothing more than simply re-using existing VFX models in order to make the CGI easier but, since they don’t do that for most of the dragons, why do it for Seasmoke?

This may be nothing more than simply re-using existing VFX models in order to make the CGI easier but, since they don’t do that for most of the dragons, why do it for Seasmoke? It might still just be that it’s quicker, or that they wanted a dragon who looked like Daenerys' to maintain some visual consistency, but it’s also possible there’s a familial connection.
Seasmoke and Syrax have been together on Dragonstone, and would have some kind of existing relationship, given Laenor Velaryon was married to Rhaenyra. That doesn’t confirm they mated, but it’s certainly very plausible. Little is known about dragon breeding, or whether a male is even needed for an egg to hatch. But if it is, while genetics don’t exactly seem to work in dragons like they do humans, the appearance of Seasmoke certainly lends itself to the idea he’s Drogon’s dad, and could be a deliberate hint towards it.

The Biggest Dragons In Game Of Thrones & House Of The Dragon
Between Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, and the lore from George R.R. Martin’s books, these dragons stand out as the biggest to roam Westeros.
Seasmoke Isn’t The Only Dragon In HOTD Who Looks Like Drogon
Dreamfyre Being The Mother Of Daenerys' Dragons Is A Possibility
There is another dragon inHouse of the Dragonwho looks similar to Drogon, and that’s Dreamfyre, who is bonded with Helaena Targaryen. They haven’t appeared on-screen much, but when they did, there was a clear resemblance to Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion. Again, this could simply be to do with cost/time-effective CGI but, prior to the claim that Daenerys' dragon eggs were in season 2, episode 3, Dreamfyre being their mother was the most prevalent theory.
Like Syrax, Dreamfyre was known as a dragon who laid a lot of clutches of eggs. In 54 AC - around 75 years beforeHouse of the Dragonseason 2’s timeline- three eggs were stolen by a woman named Elissa Farman, the lover of Queen Rhaena Targaryen. It’s believed that Elissa fled to Pentos and then sold the dragon eggs to the sealord of Braavos, before she herself sailed as far as Asshai.

That Elissa stole three eggs specifically, and King Jaehaerys I Targaryen even mentioned they might turn to stone, seems very specific otherwise.
The initial marketing forFire & Blood, (incorrectly, as per George R.R. Martin’sNot A Blog) promised the origin of Dany’s dragon eggs, and this was the only real option for it in the text. That Elissa stole three eggs specifically, and King Jaehaerys I Targaryen even mentioned they might turn to stone, seems very specific otherwise. Dreamfyre’s appearance inHouse of the Dragoncertainly fits with that, at least before season 2’s reveal.

Episode 8
August 4
Dreamfyre perhaps makes more sense, especially based on her appearance inHouse of the Dragon, since it’s possible she had them without them being fertilized by a male. It would be quite fitting givenDreamfyre’s name is reflective of how Dany’s dragons are born amid Khal Drogo’s funeral pyre, and that they were stolen eggs, much like Daenerys thinks her birthright was stolen - and intends to use the dragons to take it back.
It’s possible for either option to work, though, and no matter what, there are questions over how the eggs eventually end up in the Shadow Lands beyond Asshai. That’s perhaps a story for another time, however, rather than oneHouse of the Dragonwill tell.
