After over a decade ofThe Last of Us, Sony is finally releasing a new limited-edition DualSense wireless controller to celebrate the series, but the timing couldn’t be worse. The Last of Usis the definitive series of the PlayStation brand ever since the game first released in 2013, spawning a divisive sequel and a critically acclaimed HBO series, so most fans would expect the series to continue with another sequel.

Unfortunately, the special new controller’s announcement also comes at the same time as series creatorNeil Druckmann practically confirmed thatthere will be noThe Last of Us 3.This choice by Naughty Dog islikely because the studio is moving on to different projects like the upcomingIntergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which is an exciting project, but still disappointing for long-time fans ofTLOU.

Following TLOU Part 3 News, It’s Poor Timing

A Bittersweet Special Edition Release

The Last of Ushas been an important series for Sony and Naughty Dog for over a decade, spawning several remakes and remasterswhich some fans are getting sick of. Unfortunately, the reign ofTLOUgames might be coming to an endafter series creator Neil Druckmann hinted that there won’t be a third game. Druckmann stated, “this could be it”when speaking about the series at large.

With the shadow of that vague statement over the series, releasing a celebratory controller seems like poor timing. Perhaps the new DualSense controller is a swan song forThe Last of Usin terms of video games, which makes its release more consolatory than celebratory. The controller is most likely coming out now to mark the upcoming second season of the HBO show, which does make sense. For fans of the games, a new controller alongside almost confirmation that there will be no more sequels is bittersweet at best.
