Summary

A new clip of 2024’sThe Crowwas released during San Diego Comic-Con, and though it gives a taste of the type of action sequences the movie will have, it only fuels my biggest concern about it. 2024 will see a new adaptation of James O’Barr’s 1989 dark superhero comic book seriesThe Crow, directed by Rupert Sanders and starring Bill Skarsgård. Although it has already drawn comparisons to Alex Proyas’ 1994 adaptation of the same name starring Brandon Lee, 2024’sThe Crowisn’t a remake of it, and instead, it’s a reimagining of O’Barr’s comic books with a modern twist.

2024’sThe Crowfollows Eric (Skarsgård), a young musician who is murdered along with his fiancée, Shelly Webster (FKA Twigs). Some time later, Eric is resurrected so he can get his revenge against his and Shelly’s murderers, and for that, he’s guided by a crow and given unbelievable healing abilities – however, finding the man behind the murders will be tougher than initially thought. The Crowwill be action-packed, as seen inthe clip revealed at SDCC 2024, but it’s also fueling my biggest concern about this new version.

Bill Skarsgård’s Criticism Of 2024’s The Crow Is Actually A Good Sign For The Movie After All The Backlash

Bill Skarsgård shared one complaint about his character in The Crow, but this is good for the movie as it shows he understands the character.

The Crow 2024’s SDCC Clip Focuses On The Movie’s Action

The Crow 2024’s Clip Shows One Of Eric’s Many Fights

Eric’s main target inThe Crowwill be Danny Huston’s character, but there aren’t many details about him. Judging by the trailers, Huston’s character is a crime boss with some supernatural power, as he’s seen whispering something in a girl’s ear and his eyes change color. Shelly says she saw things she shouldn’t have, and it’s understood she saw Huston’s character and/or his people doing something sinister. The trailers forThe Crowalso teaseEric’s revenge mission that will see many action scenes with lots of blood, including one set in a car.

Eric is shown fighting Huston’s henchmen in a car, but even though he kills some of them and badly injures others, he’s thrown out of the car and is run over by a truck. As Eric can’t die (again) until his revenge is complete, he gets back up (though with a very graphic and painful broken leg) and continues his mission. This scene is teased in one of the trailers, and it givesa great example of the type of action that will be featured in Sanders’The Crow, but that’s exactly why I’m worried about this movie.

I’m Worried The Crow 2024 Will Focus More On Action Than Story

The Crow’s Story Has A Heavy Emotional Charge

The core ofThe Crowis Eric’s grief, and his resurrection and revenge mission are his way of coping with it.

The Crow, in all its formats, has action scenes and I love that, but they’re not the main focus of the story. The core ofThe Crowis Eric’s grief, and his resurrection and revenge mission are his way of coping with it, and that’s what the focus of an adaptation of O’Barr’s comic books should be. Proyas’ version had an excellent balance between its action scenes, the story, and Eric’s personal struggles, and we have a lot to thank Brandon Lee as he beautifully portrayed Eric’s pain.

Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven in the 2024 The Crow remake

The trailers of 2024’sThe Crowhave focused too much on the movie’s action scenes, making me think they will also be the movie’s main focus. While I don’t mind seeing Skarsgård as an action star, especially as a dark, supernatural superhero,I fearThe Crowwill be too much action and not enough substance, thus forgetting about Eric’s grief and his undying love for Shelly, even if the movie’s tagline is literally “true love never dies”.

The Crowseems too stuffed already, but I’d like to think the trailers have been misleading.

Another thing that worries me is thatThe Crowwill also focus too much on its supernatural elements, which I know are an inevitable part of the story, but apparently making Huston’s villain supernatural feels like too much and too risky. The Crowseems too stuffed already, but I’d like to think the trailers have been misleading.

Wait, Did The Crow Remake Make Its Main Villain Supernatural?

The first trailer for The Crow remake shows Danny Huston as the main villain to defeat, but this version seems to have made him supernatural.

How The Crow Can Be Action Packed & Still Succeed

The Crow 2024 Should Pay Attention To What’s Important About The Story

The Crow should give Eric’s inner struggles, grief, and love for Shelly the time and attention they deserve.

The Crowseems to have lost its focus (if it ever had one), but as I mentioned above, that might just be the trailers giving the wrong idea. The best way I seeThe Crowsucceeding without sacrificing all its impressive action scenes is by giving Eric’s inner struggles, grief, and love for Shelly the time and attention they deserve. There’s also the issue of action scenes being there just for the sake of it, which is a huge problem in most action movies.

Poster for The Crow (2024)

Each of Eric’s fights should serve a purpose: either to kill one of Huston’s henchmen involved in his and Shelly’s deaths or to get closer to Huston. Regardless of these things, I’m still excited to watch Sanders’ take onThe Crow, but I hope it won’t be a letdown or a story lacking direction and purpose despite having rich source material.

The Crow

The Crow (2024) is a dark and gritty reimagining of the original graphic novel. It follows Eric, who is resurrected from the dead to avenge his and his soulmate’s brutal murders. Armed with supernatural abilities, Eric seeks justice against the killers responsible, navigating through a corrupt city that is as much a character as he is. This adaptation introduces new elements to captivate the modern audience!
