Summary
The Collectedhas gotten an update after years of waiting. TheupcomingThe Collected, a sequel to the 2009 horror movieThe Collectorand its follow-upThe Collection, has been in development since the latter’s release in 2012. Although it was officially announced in 2014 with star Josh Stewart set to return, development had stalled as of 2018. It was revived in 2019 but production stalled several days in, with further development at a standstill. Franchise co-writer and director Marcus Dunstan revealed that this was partially due to the fact that he did not hold the rights to the franchise.
The Directrecently sat down for an interview with Marcus Dunstan. During their conversation, heconfirmed that the sequel was back in development, revealing that “the legal elements holding it back were all alleviated.” The team isn’t rushing the project into development, hoping that they can put together the best version of the movie possible using ideas for the story that they have been brainstorming for quite some time. However, he is insistent that he can “Shout it loud and proud: The Collector is coming back.” Read Dunstan’s full quote below:

As of about four days ago, the legal elements holding it back were all alleviated. And it is coming back, I can tell you. Shout it loud and proud: The Collector is coming back. It is free. It is going to be a barreling freight train for your mind of fear. Yes, we can do it right! …Right away, I want to say, courtesy of a gentleman named Todd, who’s spent five years getting these rights all sorted out, It’s coming back. And we’re not bringing it back until it’s something that we feel is the best one. And that we feel is in honor of the time we’ve been waiting because we haven’t been waiting on the bench just staring at the sky. We’ve been conceiving and concocting. Yeah, here it comes. And we want to honor this opportunity with something great.
When Could The Collector 3 Come Out?
It Has Already Been More Than A Decade Since The Collection
While Dunstan seems confident that theThe Collectorsequelwill finally see the light of day,it will still likely be some time before it actually hits theaters. The production process could be complicated by the availability of Dunstan and - if they want him to reprise the role of “final boy” Arkin O’Brien - Josh Stewart. Stewart has remained active in the industry and has taken on a variety of major roles in the meantime, including playing Wallace in the Apple TV+ historical miniseriesManhunt.
Every Horror Movie With A Final Boy (Not Girl)
Final girls are the horror standard, but what about boys? Horror has a huge range of final boys from young children to middle-aged survivors.
Additionally, even if the screenplay is completed quickly due to the amount of time that Dunstan and his co-writer Patrick Melton have already had to develop ideas, the new horror movie’s production timeline could be prolonged by various factors. In addition to assembling a cast, a budget, and locations, the movie could premiere more than a year after it wraps. The franchise has so far had somewhat extended post-production periods, something that was compounded by the sequel’s pre-release festival run. Below, see when the movies were shot compared to their release dates:

January 11 - August 02, 2025
June 25, 2025
Even ifThe Collectedcompletes pre-production before the end of the year and shoots in early 2025, it might not come to theaters until mid-2026 or later given the precedent set by the previous movies in the franchise. Ultimately, it remains to be seen how quickly all the elements required to bring the new story to life come together. However, Dunstan’s confidence in the project makes it likely that the wait for the new sequel won’t extend to two decades at the very least.
