A relatively minor strongly suggests this is the case inSonic the Hedgehog#70 by writer Evan Stanley, penciler Aaron Hammerstrom, inker Matt Froesem, colorist Reggie Graham, assistant colorists Jonathon Dobbs and Rik Mack, and letterer Shawn Lee. During a charity race that’s secretly orchestrated by the small-time villain Clutch,Surge and Kit inadvertently become the heroes when they chase off an incognitoSonic, who has temporarily aligned with Dr. Eggmanto investigate sabotage.
Surge and Kit are clearly happy when their heroics are announcedon a loudspeaker and displayed for all to see on the big screen. The two villains soak in the adoration of the crowd who cheer for them, andSurge even proclaims that they are heroes with a smile on her face.

Surge and Kit Should Remain Villains for a Little Longer

Some readers already suffered a minor heart attack when Surge and Kit appeared to join the Restoration a few issues ago and subsequently sighed a sigh of relief when it was soon revealed they had ulterior motives. These same fans might have expected the more timid Kit to revel in the heroics in this issue. After all, he was already tempted by Sonic and his friends before and is clearly only following Surge to please her.
However, it’s particularly troublesome that Surge reacts positively to the praise. Surge is clearly the more diabolical of the two cyborgs, which she put on full displayduring her epic fight against Sonic. This event easily defined her as a psychopath with a twisted ideology. So to see her appear happy when she’s called a hero is particularly troublesome,since becoming good would clearly result in her rejecting the best parts of her character.
Surge and Kit’s Dynamic Could Still Work Even If They Do Become Good
Although Kit is more of a follower, he’s already demonstrated that he is capable of terrifying outbursts of pure unadulterated rage during situations involving Surge. So, if Surge becomes good, then it will likely eliminate any future emotional explosions from Kit.Even if Surge and Kit do reject their evil ways by the end of this current arc, one silver lining is that Surge would likely still struggle to treat Kit with respect. It’s a sad dynamic, but it’s also incredibly powerful, since it’s impossible for readers to not feel sorry for Kit and despise Surge for mistreating him.
Of course, Surge and Kit becoming good would obviously be a stunning example of character growth, which is always an effective form of storytelling, but it shouldn’t happen so soon. Surge needs to remain a twisted, sadistic psychopath and Kit must be subjected to Surge’s abuse for a little longer. Hopefully, this unsettling scene is just one of many instances documentingSurgeandKit’s long journey to eventually leaving their evil ways behind because IDW’sSonic the Hedgehogcan still benefit from them as tragic villains.
