Should You Upgrade to macOS Ventura? Here’s How to Decide
macOS Ventura is full of amazing features and improvements, including Stage Manager, Continuity Camera, Freeform and more. A new macOS version often gets people excited about all the new features, but some may be on the fence about upgrading for fear of different software or lack of functionality.
Today, we’ll discuss the pros and cons of upgrading to macOS Ventura on your Mac and whether it’s worth it or not.
Why Should You Upgrade to macOS Ventura?
While macOS Ventura may not be as much of a visual upgrade as macOS Big Sur or macOS Monterey, there are still plenty of reasons to upgrade. We’ve discussed some of these below:
1. New Features (Continuity Camera, Stage Manager, and More)
macOS Ventura has plenty of new features that make the macOS experience even better. We’ve looked at most of thesemacOS Ventura featuresseparately. These include Stage Manager,Continuity Camera, Passkeys, updated Mail, Messages, Spotlight, and more.
These features alone are a major reason to upgrade to macOS Ventura, as you don’t want to miss out on them. This should make your macOS experience even better.
2. macOS Ventura Is More Secure
The latest version of any operating system contains security patches and fixes for any vulnerabilities, and macOS Ventura is no different. Apple keeps on updating its software against any new malware or vulnerabilities, which means the latest macOS version will always be more secure than the last.
If you don’t upgrade to macOS Ventura, your Mac will keep on running fine. However, it may be more vulnerable to malware and other security threats.
3. macOS Ventura Will Be Faster on Some Macs
The latest versions of macOS are generally faster than the previous updates, and we suspect macOS Ventura will be no different.
Beta testers have reported that macOS Ventura is slightly quicker than macOS Monterey, and hopefully, we’ll see that carry on to the final public release as well.
Why Shouldn’t You Upgrade to macOS Ventura?
Apple’s macOS Ventura software update can have all the impressive features in the world, but we still have valid reasons not to update just yet. So, let’s take a look at the downsides:
1. macOS Ventura May Have Some Bugs Initially
Each new macOS version goes through a long testing period before Apple finally releases it to the general public. The first stage is thedeveloper beta, followed by the public beta, which allows users to test the new software and report any bugs to Apple.
Apple then patches any bugs or vulnerabilities in every successive beta version. This means that the company fixes all major and minor issues before the final rollout of the software.
However, like any other major upgrade or software release of this kind, there might still be some bugs or glitches that will need ironing out after the final public release. Usually, Apple fixes these issues within days of the official release, so it may be worth waiting for a few days to have a more stable version.
2. Some Apps Might Not Be Compatible Straight Away
Another main reason for the developer beta is to allow developers to test their software and make it compatible with the newest macOS release. And although most developers have their software ready for release in time for the final macOS release, there still may be some apps that might not be compatible with macOS Ventura.
Similarly, you may run into some apps that work with macOS Ventura but do not take advantage of its new features. In that case, you may want to stay on your current macOS version to ensure third-party app compatibility.
3. Some Features Will Not Be Available Initially
Apple announced some great features alongside macOS Ventura’sannouncement at WWDC 2022; however, unfortunately, some features won’t be arriving at the launch of macOS Ventura.
For example, Apple says that Freeform won’t be available in the initial public rollout and will arrive in a later point version update of the software. So, you may want to wait a couple of months and install the final feature-packed macOS Ventura once it has everything you are looking for.
Update to macOS Ventura When You’re Ready
No matter which operating system you use, we always recommend updating it to the latest software. You get all the latest features, as well as any security patches and software fixes. Updating your Mac to the latest software keeps your system safe and secure.
However, you can delay updating your Mac to macOS Ventura until a few days after the public release, as this will allow Apple to iron out any bugs that may arise. However, we won’t recommend delaying it any longer than this, except for exceptional circumstances such as when some specific apps you use aren’t compatible with macOS Ventura.
The macOS Sonoma beta may be tempting, but it often isn’t worth the hassle. You’re better off waiting for the full release.
