From a Númenórean perspective; from an Elendil perspective, it’s a very rich seam this season for him. He’s put in some incredibly challenging positions, because essentially it’s the hero’s journey for Elendil. We’ve got to get him to a place where he’s able to lead the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.
He doesn’t choose to be the leader; he becomes a leader. It’s kind of forced upon him through circumstance, because you’ve got a blind queen, and he has to see for her now in the court. She teaches him how to interpret events. And then he ends up in a position of being challenged with his faith. Will he relinquish his faith and save his own life, or is he prepared to die for his faith? These are some of the things that will be going on this season.
It’s so rich as an actor, that’s what you want. And particularly with Elendil, there’s this stoic man with still rivers running very deep in him. You don’t always know exactly what he’s thinking, but you can kind of feel him. That’s the great joy; how much to show of him.
Because he’s a hero archetype. For the fans, people know this guy, and they love this guy based on very little information other than what happens with Sauron at the end. For me and the writers, it’s like, “How do we make him into this fully-rounded, morally complex human being who might make the wrong decision at this point? And how does he learn to become a leader?”
What Is Elendil’s Destiny In The Rings Of Power Season 2?
The Rings of Powerseason 2sees Númenor in a precarious situation, with Míriel now blind after the battle in the Southlands, and her father dying before she could return home. Because of the heavy loss they sustained trying to assist the Middle-earth location,it appears Elendil will be thrust into a leadership position, even if he doesn’t want it.However, given his destiny as an important commander in the Second Age’s future, these next episodes can help set the stage for his growing role.
Based on Owen’s comments about what to expect from hisRings of Powercharacter, it appears he will be slowly stepping into the shoes of a larger leader, with Míriel acting as a mentor while he assists her. Since the Last Alliance won’t happen for quite some time,the show can take its time with Elendil’s evolution, making his change into a determined leader all the more believable.This will also set the stage for where the Prime Video series may end, likely showing his final battle against the dark forces of Mordor.
