Spoilers are ahead for The Umbrella Academy season 4’s ending.

Summary

AfterThe Umbrella Academyseason 4’s story plays out,Luther Hargreeves' (Tom Hopper) mission to the moon makes very little sense. In the third outing, the Hargreeves siblings realize that their actions in the past created a new timeline, rendering the 2019 they return to vastly different from what was shown in season 1. Their adoptive father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore), reconsidered his superhero family selections, thus replacing the Umbrellas withThe Sparrow Academy. Tasked with stopping the newUmbrella Academytimelinefrom being consumed by a kugelblitz, the Hargreeves learn a lot from the new version of Reginald.

InThe Umbrella Academyseason 3’s ending, Reginald’s Hotel Obsidian is revealed to be a portal tothe Hotel Oblivion — a machine built to redesign and reset the universe. Realizing that Reginald’s plan is killing her siblings, Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) takes him out and hits the button herself. In the rebuilt universe, the Hargreeves siblings don’t have their powers — and Abigail (Liisa Repo-Martell), Reginald’s long-dead wife, has been resurrected. In fact, restoring Abigail seems to have been the reason for Reginald’s reset machine — a twist that somewhat invalidates Luther’s four-year moon stint.

What The Hell Has The Umbrella Academy Done To Luther In Season 4?!

Luther has always been awkward and eccentric in The Umbrella Academy, but season 4 makes a baffling change to Tom Hopper’s character.

Luther Really Didn’t Need To Be On The Moon In The Umbrella Academy

The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Confirms That Luther Was Protecting Abigail’s Body

When the series begins, Luther is pretty much defined by his time spent on the Moon. Sent to the location by Reginald,Luther believed he was looking out for extraterrestrial threatsand conducting scientific experiments. Living in total seclusion on the Moon base, Luther would send reports back to Reginald — for four years. However, the third season ofUmbrella Academyreveals why Luther was on the Moon. Upset by his father’s deception, Luther confronts Sparrow Reginald, who informs Moon Boy thathis space mission was actually all about guarding “the most precious thing in the universe.”

If Sir Reginald Hargreeves intended to reset the universe anyway, he surely didn’t need a frozen corpse to bring Abigail back to life.

Flashbacks reveal that the late Abigail Hargreeves, whose body lay in a cryogenic chamber just a stone’s throw from Luther’s patrol zone, iswhy Umbrella Academy’s Luther was on the Moonfor so long. However,by the end of the third season, Luther’s mission to protect Abigail seems pretty nonsensical. If Sir Reginald Hargreeves intended to reset the universe anyway, he surely didn’t need a frozen corpse to bring Abigail back to life. After all, Allison’s family, who didn’t exist in the Sparrow timeline, came back after the reset, so Luther guarding Abigail was pretty pointless from a plot standpoint.

Trying To Explain Luther’s Moon Mission

Reginald Wanted To Give Luther Something To Focus On

ByUmbrella Academy season 4’s ending, there’s no additional insight as to why, exactly, Reginald wanted Luther to protect Abigail’s body. Given how the reset machine works, there’s no functional, plot-point-driven reason. Pogo suggests thatLuther’s Moon mission was about providing him with something to focus on.

However, it also could’ve stemmed from some illogical, emotion-driven part of Reginald, who loved Abigail so much that he couldn’t bear the thought of anything thwarting his plans to resurrect her. It’s possible Abigail’s body was an insurance policy tied to Reginald’s Plan B, though the show doesn’t indicate that.

Luther’s Moon Mission Is One Of The Umbrella Academy’s Many Unresolved Stories

Umbrella Academy Season 4 Is Full Of Frustrating Plot Holes & Unexplained Happenings

Luther’s seemingly pointless mission to the Moon is just one of many frustratingUmbrella Academyseason 4 plot holes. With just six episodes,The Umbrella Academyseason 4 condenses its many threads, all while introducing more charactersand plot points, which leads to tons of plot holes, inconsistencies, and poorly executed (or downright confusing) moments.

All four seasons ofThe Umbrella Academyare now streaming on Netflix.

A lot of these issues stem fromUmbrella Academy’s Jennifer(Victoria Sawal), who plays host to the Marigold-reactive substance Durango, but others, like Luther’s mission to the Moon to safeguard Abigail’s corpse, are unresolved threads that began inThe Umbrella Academyseason 1.
