Things are moving forward forConstantine 2, as the director of Keanu Reeves' upcomingDCsequel reveals an exciting update on the film. After two decades, one of the 2000s first comic book franchises is making an unexpected comeback, with Reeves set to play John Constantine once again. WhiletheConstantine 2moviehas been in development since the initial 2022 announcement, updates have been rolling in very slowly, but it appears the pace might be picking up for Reeves' upcoming film.
In a new interview withCollider, Francis Lawrence, who directed the firstConstantinemovie, was asked if he had any new information aboutConstantine 2. Without getting too specific,Lawrence stressed thatConstantine 2is closer than ever to becoming a reality. He stated the following about the sequel’s current progress:

I will say we are closer than ever to being able to do a sequel, which is a great thing. And Akiva, Keanu and I are super, super excited about it.
We have a great idea. We have gone through a bunch of the comics over the years and looked at things. I will say that there’s probably grains from things that we’re pulling, but in truth, most of it is just coming from the three of us, you know, loving the character, loving the world, having it sort of in the back of our minds for 20 years and just kind of percolating on ideas, and stories and characters we love, and ideas we love.

What Francis Lawrence’s Constantine 2 Update Means For The DC Sequel
Given that this is the most positive update that has emerged aboutConstantine 2,it could indicate several things have happened to the film over the last year. To begin with, it wouldn’t be shocking iftheConstantine 2storyis finally where it needs to be, especially if DC Studios has any involvement with the film. Per James Gunn, no DC film will move forward unless the screenplay and the overall creative vision are completely finalized, which could very well be what Lawrence is alluding to in his newConstantine 2update.
Even though Lawrence didn’t provide any filming details, it’s possible one of the final steps that is currently happening is finalizing who will actually be part of theConstantine 2cast. With Lawrence referencing how they have been looking at the comics, time will tell ifConstantine 2will adapt any stories in the Hellblazer’s expansive mythology. Depending on where they are in the development process, there is always the chance thatConstantine 2will get into production either later next year or in 2026, based on Lawrence’s comments.

Our Take On Francis Lawrence’s Constantine 2 Update
While it’s exciting to hear from Lawrence that they are closing in on where they need to be with the film, the bigger question that still remains unanswered is whereConstantine 2fits into DC Studios' plans. Presumably,Constantine 2will be part ofthe DC Elseworlds movie bannerat DC Studios unless they have found a way to retroactively fit Reeves' version of Constantine into James Gunn’s DC Universe. Hopefully, more answers aboutConstantine 2will start to roll out sooner rather than later.
