Summary

My greatest fear aboutFalloutseason 2’s direction has been put to rest — and I couldn’t be more thrilled. When asked about the show’s sophomore outing in the past, showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner were pretty crypticabout whetherFalloutseason 2would follow in the video game series' footsteps and be an anthology. If that were the case, each season of the TV show adaptation would be set in theworld ofFalloutwhile following different characters — or, bolder yet, covering different chunks ofFallout’s timeline, just like the video game installments.

I really enjoyFallout’s approach to adapting the video game’s lore. In order to capture as many ofFallout’s factionsas possible, the TV series features three protagonists: Vault Dweller Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell), who leaves her underground bunker to find her father, Hank MacLean (Kyle MacLachlan); The Ghoul (Walton Goggins), a bounty hunter who used to be Hollywood star Cooper Howard before the bombs dropped; and Maximus (Aaron Moten), a member of the Brotherhood of Steel. For me,Fallout’s cast of characters, and their many threads, provides enough of an anthology feel while still putting the narrative first.

I’m So Relieved Amazon’s Fallout Adaptation Isn’t An Anthology Series

Fallout Season 2 Needs To Answer Some Unresolved Plotlines

Although theshowrunners’Falloutseason 2 anthology responsehas been decidedly evasive in the past, I’m excited to know thatAmazon Prime Video is “fully committed” to the characters and storylines introduced inFallout’s Emmy-nominated first season. In a recent interview withVariety, Amazon executives Vernon Sanders and Jennifer Salke spoke directly to the sophomore outing’s trajectory. “It does have a lot of doors we can go through, which is the beauty of the IP,” Salke admitted before reiterating that Amazon is on track to continue the journey whereFalloutseason 1’s endingleft off.

…breaking from the anthology approach is, in my opinion, one of the better points of deviation.

While I do think an anthology approach would be a fun way to tackle a game withFallout’s scale and scope, it’s pretty clear from season 1’s trajectory that at least the first two seasons of the show are meant to follow Lucy, Maximus, and The Ghoul. TheFalloutshow makes big changes to the games, and breaking from the anthology approach is, in my opinion, one of the better points of deviation. Otherwise, subsequent seasons would have to spend time introducing new characters, and while that might work in an interactive game, it’s far less appealing to TV viewers.

Ella Purnell rarely misses, which her recent hit series with an impressive 94% on Rotten Tomatoes proves — so why the 2024 Emmy Awards snub?

Fallout Season 2’s Commitment To Its Characters Is Reassuring After Season 1’s Cliffhanger

The First Season Of Fallout Sets Up Lucy & The Ghoul’s Journey To New Vegas

At the end ofFalloutseason 1, the series teases several exciting developments for its sophomore season. While it’s unclear what will comenext for every faction inFalloutseason 2, I’m excited by the prospect of seeing the Brotherhood of Steel come to blows with other groups in the Wasteland. It’s been revealed that Hank, Lucy’s dad, is a die-hard Vault-Tec employee who was frozen before the bombs to carry out the corporate mission — and now he’s headed to New Vegas in power armor. With so many cliffhangers,Fallout’s commitment to its existing characters is wonderful.

Fallout Continues A Positive Awards Trend After The Last Of Us Made Emmy History

Last awards season, The Last of Us made Emmys history as an incredibly decorated video game adaptation, and, this year, Fallout continues the trend.

Fallout Can Still Honor The Games While Having More Continuity

As the Amazon execs put it,the series has “a lot of doors” worth opening— and not just doors toFallout’s many Vaultsscattered throughout the Wasteland. In fact, I think the comment wisely points out that the show is capable of telling many stories, and introducing many characters, without dropping its current leads. Fromreferences to Easter eggs,Falloutseason 1did a great job of creating continuity between the show and the games. In my opinion, Amazon Prime Video’sFalloutseries doesn’t need to be an anthology to continue that exciting trend.
