On October 26th, 2023, Luminar Neo brought GenErase to its system. While many features of Luminar Neo use AI technology, GenErase is Luminar Neo’s first generative AI tool. There are keydifferences between general AI and generative AI, which makes this a landmark feature.
The GenErase tool uses generative AI technology to allow users to erase small or large parts of a photo in Luminar Neo while keeping everything realistic-looking. The pre-existing Erase tool does a pretty good job already, but with generative AI technology, your results will only get better.

How to Use GenErase in Luminar Neo
To access the GenErase tool, you mustdownload Luminar Neo. You can purchase a perpetual license for Luminar Neo for $269 at the time of writing—usually $599. You can also buy a Pro subscription with options from $14.95 for one month, $9.08 monthly for 12 months, or $14.95 monthly for 24 months.
If you already own Luminar Neo, upgrade to the latest version, Luminar Neo 1.15.0, by selectingLuminar Neo>Check for updates>Install update. From this window, you can also check for automatic updates to avoid manually updating in the future.
Once updated, upload your images to the Catalog and select the one you wish to edit. Then, instead of selecting Edit, stay on the Catalog page and selectGenEraseunder the right-hand image information. If you don’t see the GenErase button, restart Luminar Neo.
GenErase uses a masking brush. Although it’s possible to mask multiple parts of your image at once to erase them with GenErase, we suggest masking one section at a time to ensure no mishaps. Set the brush size, then brush over the areas and objects you want to erase until it’s all red, including a small area around them.
Once masked, selectEraseon the GenErase toolbar. You may have to wait a minute or two while the AI works its magic. Once erased, you can’t even tell there was anything else there.
Repeat this step for any other blemishes, objects, shadows, or other parts of the image you want to remove. Always ensure you include a little extra space around the object in your mask.
Once you’re happy with the erased parts of your image, you may save it by selectingSave. Now you’ll be able to edit the image as if it was photographed with the objects erased.
Your saved GenErase photos will appear in a folder named Generative Creations on the Catalog page, and they will also appear under All Photos next to the originals.
To carry on editing your image, select the image and go toEditat the top. You can use any of the Edit tools on your GenErase-edited image.
