Apple changed the default notification tone in iOS 17 to Rebound, which many users dislike because of how quiet it sounds. Fortunately, iOS 17.2 lets you change it to whatever you like, including the iconic Tri-tone alert. We’ll walk you through the steps.
How to Change the Default Notification Sound on Your iPhone
While the iOS 17 update was well-received by most iPhone users, not everybody was a fan of the Rebound alert tone that they were forced to use with no option to change it. Unlike the Tri-tone alert, the raindrop-like sound of Rebound is softer. This makes it difficult to hear from across the room, ultimately defeating the purpose of a push notification.
With the release of iOS 17.2, however, you finally have the option to change your iPhone’s default notification sound. So, if you haven’t updated already, go toSettings > General > Software Updateto check for the latest iOS version available and follow the steps below to change the notification sound:
Unfortunately, if you’re using aniPhone that isn’t compatible with iOS 17, you won’t be able to customize your device’s alert sound. On the bright side, the default notification sound in older iOS versions is Tri-tone, so you likely wouldn’t want to change it anyway.
Once you complete the steps mentioned above, all apps that use default alerts will use the tone you selected. It’s worth noting that the alert sound for notifications from certain apps like Reminders, Messages, and Calendar will remain unchanged unless you individually change it fromSettings > Sound and Haptics > [Type of Alert]. You can evenset custom iPhone ringtonesfrom the same menu.
All in all, the option to change your iPhone’s default notification sound was long overdue. While iOS 17’s Rebound alert tone is certainly a nice change if you prefer more subtle and softer alerts, we advise returning to Tri-tone or selecting a louder sound if you have hearing difficulties and want to guarantee that you catch every notification the moment you get it.
