WARNING! This article contains major SPOILERS for House of the Dragon season 2, episode 4 and George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, on which the show is based!

Summary

ThoughHouse of the Dragonofficially introduced Aegon’s dream into the TV franchise’s canon, it leaves a massive mystery for George R.R. Martin to answer that the show won’t be able to. WhileAegon the Conqueror’s Song of Ice and Fire dreamisn’t specifically mentioned in Martin’sFire & Bloodbook, the author had discussed the prophecy with theHouse of the Dragon’s showrunner. King Aegon I Targaryen’s dream was then confirmed and explained inHouse of the Dragon’s series premiere, revealinghe foresaw the need for a Targaryen sitting the Iron Throne to unite the realm against the cold and darkin the North, aka the White Walkers.

Aegon’s prophecy would be fulfilled inGame of Throneswhen Jon Snow, aka Aegon VI Targaryen, and Queen Daenerys Targaryen united humanity and defeated the Night King and White Walkers at Winterfell. However, there are still debates about whether Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, or both were theprophesied Prince That Was Promised. Regardless, while Aegon’s dream comes true inGame of Thrones, thefact that Daenerys Targaryen was completely unaware of its existence creates a mysteryafterHouse of the Dragonthat I’m hoping Martin will answer in his books.

What Happens To Aegon The Conqueror’s Prophecy Is A Question House Of The Dragon Can’t Answer

The prophecy was seemingly lost after House of the Dragon’s timeline

By the start ofHouse of the Dragon, Aegon’s dream has been passed down from each Targaryen king to their heir – from the Conqueror himself through Viserys and Rhaenyra – without losing or exposing the prophecy. As ofHouse of the Dragonseason 2, episode 4’s ending, Rhaenyra has finally passed on the prophecy to her own heir, Jacaerys Velaryon.Jace is now confirmed to be the youngest Targaryen to know and be trusted with Aegon’s dream, but the fates of these characters leave a bigger mystery of how the prophecy is passed down afterHouse of the Dragon’s ending and how it becomes lost before Daenerys’ time.

Fire & Bloodreveals Jacaerys dies in the Dance, meaning Rhaenyra has to pass it on to her next heir, Joffrey. Of course, Joffrey also dies in the Dance, leaving Rhaenyra to entrust the dream with her even younger son, Aegon. After the Dance, he ascends the Iron Throne as King Aegon III Targaryen, and I’m almost certain he’ll learn the prophecy beforeRhaenyra’s death inHouse of the Dragon. In fact, I’m convinced Emma D’Arcy’s narration in the pilot’s opening scene is actually Rhaenyra telling Aegon about the dream and Targaryen history. Consequently, I’m left wonderingwhen and how House Targaryen loses Aegon’s dream afterHouse of the Dragonand beforeGame of Thrones.

Will George R.R. Martin Answer What Happened To Aegon’s A Song Of Ice & Fire Dream?

There are still ways for Martin to reveal what happened to the dream

Thoughthe Conqueror’s dream isn’t included inFire & Blood, presumably because the maesters and court sources weren’t privy to the existence of the prophecy, it could still find its way into other George R.R. Martin books. Martin has already explored later generations in House Targaryen’s family tree through theTales of Dunk & Eggnovellas, which HBO is adapting asA Knight of the Seven Kingdomsseries. While “Egg” is only a child and far from being King Aegon V Targaryen then, the show can still feature discussions of Aegon’s dream if House Targaryen still knows it at that time.

Even if it isn’t included in a book or show, I’m hopeful that Martin will reveal what happened to Aegon’s dream beforeGame of Thrones. After all, hisA Song of Ice and Firebooks feature a vision with nods to the dream thatGame of Thronescut. In the House of the Undying, Daenerys sees her brother Rhaegar Targaryen talking about his son being the Prince That Was Promised, and that his would be the “song of ice and fire.” Whether through a blog post or interview, there’s agood chance Martin will at least reveal which Targaryen was the last to learn about Aegon’s dream.

“Aegon. What better name for a king… He is the Prince That Was Promised and his will be the Song of Ice and Fire.”
