The Witcherhas been Freya Allan’s most prominent project so far, but she’s given other great performances in a variety of genres that show her range as an actress. One of my favorite recent sci-fi releases,Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, features Allan as Mae, one of the humans with intelligenceand the ability to speak who works with the apes to reach other human settlements and prevent dangerous technology from falling into the wrong hands. Though Mae is vastly different from Allan’s role as Ciri, I hope it influences the way she plays Ciri in the future.

This led her to renounce her powers, and season 4 will see her join the Rats, but it’s difficult for me to imagine what Ciri will go through without Geralt’s protection and guidance. However, I feel she’s ready to test her mettle and develop as a character.

This is a fine line to walk, and it must be done slowly and subtly over the course of the season. It wouldn’t make sense for Ciri to suddenly become violent and cruel overnight. I want to see her build a relationship with the Rats and come to see that their ways can be effective. Her motivation for joining them and tapping into her dark side ultimately comes from a place of goodness and wanting to protect her loved ones.
Allan’s transition into a new phase of Ciri’s development must be as natural and meaningful as possible,or I’ll feel alienated from the Ciri that I knew. Female characters in fantasy TV shows often face additional scrutiny, and Ciri’s change in characterization is going to be significant. Ciri isn’t a villain; she’s a young woman trying to find herself and do the right thing. This meansThe Witchermust ensure that the audience is sympathetic towards her while recognizing that she’s changed.
