Scammers are producing fake CPUs by rebranding low-end chips, altering their model numbers, and repackaging them to appear as premium models. Don’t fall for these tricks—here’s how to spot counterfeit CPUs and avoid getting scammed.
3 Ways to Spot Fake CPUs
No one wants a fake CPU. Thankfully, there are a few methods you’re able to use to check if your CPU is legit.
1. Perform a Physical Inspection
Start by inspecting the CPU’s physical appearance. Look for mismatched model numbers, inconsistencies in labeling, and unusual fonts. Gamer Nexus' video below features some really useful comparison images to help guide you.
Check for signs of tampering, such as scratches around the edges of the CPU or on the contacts. Some scammers reapply new labels over the original ones, which can sometimes leave behind traces of adhesive or altered surface textures. Other scammers may buff down the CPU lid before they print the fake information on it, making it look much smoother and shinier than it should be.
Also, be wary of packaging that looks tampered with or is inconsistent with the manufacturer’s standard design and materials.
2. Verify CPU Specs Using Software Tools
Verify your CPU’s specs usingdiagnostic tools that check PC health, such as CPU-Z, HWiNFO, or Intel’s Processor Diagnostic Tool.
For example, Intel’s Processor Diagnostic Tool provides detailed information about your processor, including model number, core count, and clock speeds. It cross-references the processor’s ID with a database of authentic Intel products.

Running performance benchmarks is another effective way to spot a fake CPU. You can do this using tools like Cinebench, Geekbench, or 3DMark.
Let’s walk you through how to run a CPU performance benchmark using Geekbench:
When the test is complete, Geekbench will display your CPU model’s benchmark scores at the top of the page. This will include the single-core and multi-core scores, as shown in the screenshot below.
Compare the benchmark results with the scores of your specific CPU model. For example, when I ran a test, my CPU returned a single-core benchmark score of 1139 and a multi-core benchmark score of 2855. The scores matched when I scrolled down to the Single-Core Performance and Multi-Core Performance sections.
For example, my single-core score is 1139, which aligns with the expected benchmark. This strongly suggests that my CPU is legitimate.
If your CPU’s scores are significantly lower than the benchmark results, this could indicate that the CPU is fake or not performing as it should.

Ensure the seller offers a solid return policy and warranty. This can protect you if you unknowingly purchase a fake CPU. Before buying, familiarize yourself with the return process and the conditions under which you can return the product. And if possible, choose sellers who offer a money-back guarantee for peace of mind.
