He would seek out crime, and deliver vigilante justice. Since then, the character has evolved to also be a tech whiz, with his wealth affording him the opportunity to use cutting edge technology to aid in his efforts.Batman: Caped Crusaderis set in an unspecified time period which is reminiscent of those early Batman stories. No tech, no advanced gadgets, just a man and his wits against rampant crime.

Despite the lack of tech, the animated series also makes a conscious effort to update the story in several ways. Familiar characters have been adapted and changed to reflect greater diversity. This is a solid way to take thebest of the Batman storiesand still connect it to the modern era, making it engaging and representative. It’s an exciting prospect, and it’s executed rather seamlessly.

Caped Crusaderalso sheds more light on the supporting characters, putting them at the center of the story. Multiple narrative plots are created with different groups embarking on their own missions. Rather than simply following Bruce Wayne/Batman the entire time, the other characters have a richer background and become some of the most compelling aspects of the series.

Batman: Caped Crusader Doesn’t Show Enough Batman

However, this does lead to one significant problem for aBatmanTV show: There isn’t enough Batman. The shifting focus is great forexpanding the story of Gotham, and developing a rich variety of characters, but it does somewhat distract from the titular hero. Batman is not really the core focus of his own show.Instead,Caped Crusadercasts Gotham as the central lead, and follows the adjacent characters to build out their story.

Rather than simply following Bruce Wayne/Batman the entire time, the other characters have a richer background and become some of the most compelling aspects of the series.

We’re given a bird’s eye view of the action from various character perspectives, but for those tuning in for a Batman-centric animated show, it’s likely not what you’d expect.
